Sandra Hack reflects on stepping into John MacNamara’s commodity finance shoes at Deutsche Bank

Having taken over from John (Mac) MacNamara as Global Head of Structured Commodity Trade Finance on 1 April 2019, Sandra Hack had some pretty big shoes to fill. She joined Deutsche Bank in 1993 and held senior roles in Corporate and Investment Banking, Relationship Management and Credit Risk Management in Asia, in the UK, and Germany. Since 2011 she had been heading Credit Risk Management Workout & Recovery Management EMEA, playing a vital role in supporting critical client relationships. Sandra continuous to be based in Berlin. How did it feel to move into commodity finance? And how does she see this industry?

“It felt like jumping into the open sea and not being able to touch the bottom with your feet, but I have a great team around me,” she told Trade Finance TV on Location. “When you do something like this, you do it with your brain and heart, so your feet are not that important,” said Sandra as she told us how she plans to carve her own path in this “very competitive industry where everyone is looking for the same deals”.

While technology is becoming more and more important, commodity finance is all about talking to people face to face, and building relationships, agreed Sandra.

To find out more, join Sandra Hack with Trade Finance TV’s Presenter Clarissa Dann where the team was on location at the TXF Global Commodity Finance in Amsterdam held 23 to 24 May 2019.
